Creating an intelligent tempo marking

  1. Click the Expression Tool  , and double-click just above the beginning of measure 4. The Expression Selection dialog box appears. If you scroll through the list you’ll see that Presto, the expression you want to create, doesn’t appear in the list.
  2. Click the Tempo Marks category from the list on the left.
  3. Click Create. The Expression Designer dialog box appears, waiting for you to type in the text for your new marking. Note, however, that you don’t have to have any text at all—it’s perfectly legal to attach a playback definition to an invisible marking. (You’ll see its handle in the score.)
  4. Type Presto followed by two spaces. Now, let’s add a metronome marking.
  5. From the Font drop-down menu below, choose Music Font.
  6. From the Text menu, choose Font. The Font dialog box appears.
  7. Under Font, choose Maestro, and set the size to 24, then click OK.
  8. Type “q” to add a quarter note.
  9. From the Text menu, choose Font, and set the Font to Times New Roman (or Mac: Times), and the size to 14. Then click OK. Your marking now appears in the entry window. You can mix several fonts, sizes and styles in a single expression.

  2. Type “= 180”. You can mix several fonts, sizes and styles in a single expression. The Text, Music, and Number font available here is the same for all expressions in the Tempo Marks category. You can change these fonts in the Category Designer dialog box (Document menu > Category Designer).

  1. Click the Playback tab and make sure “Match playback to metronome marking text” is checked. Finale automatically recognizes the metronome marking specified. If your tempo indication does not include a metronome marking (e.g. Allegro), then you would need to uncheck this box, for Type, choose Tempo, and then assign the duration from the adjacent drop-down menu and the number of beats per minute in the “Set to value” text box.
  2. Click OK and then Select to return to the score. Now the fun part: listen to your sudden tempo change.
  3. From the Window menu, choose Playback Controls, if they’re not already showing.
  4. Click Play to hear the score playback as you defined it.
